Before getting into the meat of my years in Yellowstone.

While Pippin of Yellowstone is Deby Dixon’s first children’s book,
Deby has stated that she is writing other children’s books about Yellowstone wildlife and has founded her own publishing imprint, Little Bear’s Books, specifically for this purpose.
Upcoming books
- Dixon has announced that her second book is almost finished and a third is well underway.
- In total, she plans to write at least six additional books for her imprint, Little Bear’s Books.
- The publishing imprint is named in honor of another grizzly bear from Yellowstone, Raspberry, and her cub, Little Bear.
Other work
Beyond her children’s books, Dixon is a well-known wildlife photographer and advocate, frequently sharing her experiences and photos from Yellowstone online.
What inspired Deby Dixon to write children’s books after 13 years in Yellowstone?
Deby Dixon was inspired to write children’s books
To educate young people about Yellowstone’s wildlife in a positive way and to counter the “negativity amongst advocates” she observed.
A new approach to advocacy
- After years of writing about and photographing wildlife in Yellowstone, Dixon grew tired of the infighting and negativity among different animal rights groups.
- She decided a different strategy was needed to inspire care for the animals, especially among younger generations.
- Dixon shifted her focus from solely taking beautiful photographs to “how best to educate others, particularly young people, about the importance of these animals in our eco-system”.
A personal and public push
- Dixon has thanked the animals of the park, including the grizzly bears, for inspiring her to write.
- The creation of the books was also encouraged by human supporters, with Dixon giving special thanks to a woman named Heather for giving her the push she needed to start writing.
Continuing the mission
- This mission of education and advocacy is being carried forward through her publishing imprint, Little Bear’s Books, named after another Yellowstone grizzly cub she followed.
- Dixon continues to express her passion for wildlife and her hopes that her stories will make a difference in how people view and protect these animals.
